Hi There
Since purchasing Canoscan Lide 20 scanner Cannot install twain driver.
Followed instructions in book supposed to be for win 98 but the dialogue boxes shown are reminiscent of win 95. And do not work anyway.
I have researched this a little and while some people are having trouble installing this model scanner on win 98 others cannot install on xp. I did manage to install this once before but it was a fluke and caused problems later on. It seems to be a bit of a lottery whether the install is successful or not. The manual is clearly wrong and Canon are no help. I took the scanner to pc world once and he installed this immediately on their pc but I was unlucky on return home.
This appears to be a common problem and Canon are burrying their heads in the sand hope you can help.Michael

First thing to do is make sure that the only things running in the background are Systray & Explorer. This is important. Shut down whatever is running in the tray and then use control/alt/delete to close the rest. WindowsXP is totally different. It is based on the NT kernal. win95 & 98 are based on the same core so you should be able to install. I would recommend you install just the twain drivers first and then try the software. Some win95 programs wanted to install directly under C: not under program files. I have found that you must let them do that if that what they want. Try to change the path, but if it won't allow it then just go with what the default directory is.

This is prbly a dumb question, but are you trying to install WIN98 drivers in an XP system?? I'm a little unclear from your post.

Hi ranchhand
Sorry I didn't make it clear. I now have xp but had previously had problems when installing and also when installed on win 98.I have now discovered that my father has a Canon Lide 20 which is the same setup and many other people have these scanners or rom the same family of scanner and all experience similar problems installing on win 98. I do not have the problem now but my father does. The problems are (1)the instructions in the manual do not seem to relate to the o/s and when I follow them as best I can the twain driver will not install. Hence my father has a good scanner but cannot use it and if web write ups are to be believed Other people have had the same problem with xp so any help from someone with experience may help both my father and myself.

HI OtheHill
Yes it is USB and does not have a seperate power supply. All power and control signals are done via the usb lead. Some say they cannotinstall this scanner on win xp. And others say they have problems on win 98. Canon have not replied. I have left messages on various sites and it seems canon do not want to repair things and have ignored my requests. They appear to have a major problem and I may have to cut my service to allow some break.
