Cannot read *some* files from external HDD

Specs: Ubuntu 10.04, 2.61 Athlon 64, 4 GB RAM
the other day, I accidentally moved my external hard drive (Dane-Elec 500GB) dislodging the USB connection (the connection on the laptop is quite fragile) while I was transferring a couple of movies. After I plugged the device back in, I found that it read my folders and only some of my files: my movies, music and other random files in some folders were missing as well. Other folders, on the other hand, seemed to have all their files. Any idea on how to fix this? I use Ubuntu 10.04, but also have access to XP. (BTW, I used various computers and OSs to no avail). Oddly enough, it reports the same Free space as it had before the "crash".

Any and all help greatly appreciated.
