hello all. i have a problem installing xp home edition on my system. i had to do a complete operating system reinstallation of windows xp as i was inundated with blue screens of death, irql_not_less_or_equal and major crashes after a dell technician came out to install a new motherboard. he said there you go im in a big rush goodluck so i came in and done a test of the system and it was a mess. anyway the problem is when i try to do a reinstallation of windows it formats ok and then it gets to copying files while doing this it blue screens and says irql_not_less_or_equal. and other times it says the file luna.mst was not copied correctly it always stops first on this luna.mst file and says click enter to try again but does not install the file. another one is ERROR: sxs.dll syntax error in manifest or policy file D:\i386\asms\10\msft\windows\gdiplus.man on line 4. error installation failed D:\i386\asms error message a components file does not match the verification information present in the components manifest fatal error. i have to say i never had a problem like this before on any other pc that i had to do an operating system install on. i have spent 15 hours nonstop on trying different things like using another 2 new dvd drives to install xp with the same problem. and i took out all the ram and put in new ram i have here that was tested on another pc and works ok but still the same problem. i even went into the bios and changed the bios default raid setup to off and tried to install windows xp on a single drive with the same problems. any idea's why i cannot install xp home edition. i am using a genuine windows xp home edition disc that came with the pc. i have also tried 2 other windows xp home edition discs with no luck thanks

Not nearly enough information here.
Did the computer come from Dell with XP home installed in a RAID configuration?
Did the tech install an identical MBoard?
Are you installing with Dell restore disks?
Before you try anything more I would suggest your run memtest86 from a boot floppy or CD.
Did you enter the BIOS screens and check the values there to verify they are set correctly?

sorry im a bit tired at this stage.
Did the computer come from Dell with XP home installed in a RAID configuration? yes.
Did the tech install an identical MBoard? yes. the excact one.
Are you installing with Dell restore disks? i am installing with a genuine windows xp home edition installation disc that came with my pc when i purchased it."not the restore disc"
i will try memtest now.
Did you enter the BIOS screens and check the values there to verify they are set correctly? yes they are set correctly as i know the original settings i always used.
cheers for the help.

ok the results from the memtest are as follows...
memtest-86 v3.4
chipset nforce 4 sli intel edition-fsb 199mhz-type ddr2
settings ram 132mhz (ddr265) / cass:4-4-4-12/dual channel (128 bits.
walltime=0:18:25
cached=2046
rsvdmem=260m
memmap=e820-std
cache=on
ecc=off
test=std
pass=0
errors=3518
ecc errors=0
unexpected interrupt-haltingthis really looks messed up.
dell xps 600
windows xp home"supposed to be"
hdd raid 0 500gb hdd
geforce 9800gtx+
2gb ram
650 watt psu

No errors are acceptable. Do the following. Remove ALL RAM sticks. Re-install and remove ONE stick in the first slot 4 or 5 times to scrub off any possible oxidation. Run memtest again using just the one stick. If errors persist try another slot with the same stick that gave errors. Repeat with all the RAM sticks and slots.
Are you using ECC RAM?

ok that took a while but anyway the results are as follows...
i have 4 memory slots holding 512mb ram each. the errors always appear at the test number 7 random number sequence.
first memory slot with 1 memory module=19 errors
second memory slot with same module=134 errors
third memory slot with same module=153 errors.
and it's the same with all 4 modules.
i even done a test with a 1gb working module of the same caliber ddr2 on each slot the same amount of errors happen.
just a question could a corrupt bios cause this ?

I would say, if you're paying for the support, and if your system is still under Warranty, call Dell and tell them you want to the Tech to come back. Then, make sure the work is done to your satisfaction. You shouldn't be wasting your valuable time doing something that the Tech SHOULD have done.
Just my $.02, but you should have told the Tech that if he was leaving before the work was finished, you were calling Dell immediately.

i will make sure this is sorted soon. i'll be watching closely this time. thanks for the help it was worth a try using memtest.thanks for the reply Jennifer

If you have cleared NVRam and reset the BIOS, you may consider to use another mainboard.
Seems to me your mainboard is semi faulty according to my pass similar situation.

thanks for the info pctestcard.com.
well i just done another test with only using a 256mb ddr2 ram stick and i got windows xp home to install. the strange thing is all the memory/ram modules i have are all tested in other compatable pc's and are working fine. the thing is when i install more than 256mb ram on this problem system it then gives me errors tons of them and alot of crashes while installing any software but when i just use the 256mb ram module it works almost flawlesly. as i said there is nothing wrong with all the other ram i was using but this strange problem just gets worse with the more ram i use ?. do you think there might be a problem with fsb this pc runs at default at 800fsb im just curious as the impression i'm getting is that the more ram i'm putting in the more unstable the sys gets just a tought ? thanks

The question is this. Did you add more or different RAM and then start having issues?
If so, try going to crucial.com and running their online RAM checks.

no the 2gb of ddr2 ram i have problems with was always in my pc and it was checked in another pc and is working with no problems so it's not the ram thats causing the problem. the 256mb stick of ddr2 ram i installed windows with is the exact same ram except it's 256mb only. when i installed windows using only 256mb stick of ram i got one error as it was installing files. but the operation seems to be working ok a bit. i get the odd bsod. if i increse the memory to 512mb then the problems gets worse and i get more errors. the thing is there is nothing wrong with any of these memory modules as they work just fine in the other pc. thanks any more ideas as to what could cause the memory issues could it be memory settings somewere on the system ?

Memory that works in one PC may not be compatible with another one. Go to crucial as suggested to find what you should be using in there.
I don't know about the latest Dell rigs but back in the PC100 days Dell was very fussy about what RAM it could use. Not necessarily the best either.

this is what i should be using crucial ddr2 pc4200 CL4 unbuffered. and this is what i have crucial ddr2 pc4200 CL4 unbuffered 4x 512mb ram sticks. i just tried a 1gb crucial ddr2 pc4200 CL4 ramstick i got from a friend and i still have the same problem
i still have a feeling that it has something to do with the memory timeings. i just done a test with my 2gb ram and stuck it in another of my friends computers that uses ddr2 ram and it works flawlessly. so i know now that theres no problem with any of the ram so the only thing left is the bios motherboard that must be out of sync with the memory modules. i can't understand how there is very little information about this on the net when i see alot of other people with this same issue.
