Specs: Windows XP
I recently had to reinstall Windows XP to my computer, and now that I've done that, I can't seem to get my sound to work. I have the sound card that came with my computer here's the info:

Board: Dell Computer Corp. 0K5148 A00
Serial Number: ..CN1374043P004V.
Bus Clock: 533 megahertz
BIOS: Dell Computer Corporation A05 12/02/2003

I've tried installing the Realtek 97 Audio Driver, because I thought that was what I needed... but everytime I try to install it, a message comes up saying it is not confirmed for use with XP or something; and if I tell it to try anyways, my computer blue screens.

Here are the drivers for your machine, If you reinstalled XP, you need to install the chipset drivers first. Then select the correct audio driver and install that.

when I go to download those, my computer (nor I) know how to do it. The files end with .application. How do I run those?

You click Download button and save them somewhere you can remember like your desktop. After you download them, just click the file on your desktop to install them. At this point download the chipset drivers and the audio drivers. You have to know if you are using on board audio or Soundblaster card. The applications folder contains applications you may or may not have on your machine.

What I mean is, after I download the files to my downloads folder, I go to click them, but a window comes up saying that my computer doesn't know what to open them with. The downloaded files end with .application not .exe. If I open them in firefox, then there's a lot of text; they can't be opened with anything else.

Right click the file, click Rename, and replace ".application" with ".exe"
