Cannot install new hard drive
Name: Matt (by 9goodm30) Date: February 21, 2007 at 09:57:20 Pacific OS: win xp CPU/Ram: athlon 3800+ / 1GB
Comment:
I am trying to install a new processor, motherboard and hard drive... all seems to be working fine except when i install windows onto the hard drive it says "cannot find hard drive"
It is a serial ATA so surely it is a case of plugging the power in and the serial ATA cable?
Any suggestions?
Thanks

At start of XP Install hit F6 and offer the SATA Controller Drivers on a Floppy!

It would be helpful if you specified your motherboard model. Most if not all current motherboard have "native" SATA controllers that do not require additional drivers. But, older motherboards used a 3rd party SATA controller to add SATA functionality. Also, mobos with native SATA controllers may also include a 3rd party controller to add additional ports.
If you have the hard drive attached to a SATA port that is operating from a 3rd party controller you need to "install" the driver for the controller in order fow windows to see the drive.
So, check your mobo manual to see if you have any native SATA ports on your board and enure you are using those OR you will need to do what is commonly referred to as an F6 installation.

That is a 32bit chip. You need to do as orbital stated. Don't be concerned about the RAID issue. Just copy the SATA driver onto a floppy and supply when prompted.

No, the 3800+ is a 64-bit chip and that has nothing to do with the issue. The issue resolves around wether the motherboard chipset has native SATA support or not.

Michael J You are correct, the chip is a 64 bit chip. However to my knowledge no 32 bit AMD chipsets have native SATA support.
