Is the model number you posted for an external hard drive?

If so, you don't connect it by using an HDMI cable. Can you even connect an HDMI cable to the drive?

There are four types of connections for external hard drives. USB, eSATA, 1394 firewire, an network. USB is by far the most common.

I have no experience with these devices, but looking at the manual - download here -

It seems to have a single hdmi output ?

So not clear on your hdmi 1, 2, 3,

Are these referring to three inputs on your flatscreen tv (lcd/ledplasma)?

What make and model is your tv?

Also what make and model laptop?

Likely others here will be somewhat more familiar with the "box" you've bought - and my odd queries may help them answer your call for help (CFH) more easily?

WDGXTONBK is an WD Live box. I believe it's similar to Roku. It connects to the internet either wirelessly or via an ethernet cable, then streams the video to a monitor or HDTV via an HDMI cable. The cable hookups should be easy enough, but configuring the networks settings & TV input settings might be a little tricky.

Here's the manual:

"I want to connect to hard drive"

1st you need to get the box properly connected & configured to work with your TV, then you can connect a USB device (external hard drive or USB flash drive) to the box & view your videos or photos on the "big screen". Everything is done thru the WD remote. What's on the hard drive?

EDIT: where does the laptop fit in with all this?

I would suggest either go to the store you purchased it from or contact tech support (see info section 1 in manual you posted) for help that is familiar with the product. You need to understand that this product may contain a hard drive but is not an external hard drive for you with your laptop. If configured correctly, you can watch movies from Blockbuster or Netflix on your TV and other features, see section 2 on the manual for a complete list of features.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
