cannot detect the cd drive

Dear sir,
I am unable to detect the cd drive and dvd drive in MY COMPUTER. It was alright yesterday and all letters were there.Can anyone help in this regard how to get back this drive letters on my computer.
I tried changing the IDE cable but the same problem.
Is there any chance that some system files missing??
should I format and reload the win xp?
I am using win xp.

try to fix ur cable in the IDE slots on mobo (motherboard) again, and also scan to virus ....

Before jumping to formatting WindowsXP, make sure you do other things before. This seems to be a simple problems and would be a waist of time to format WindowsXP for this.

First, when the computer is on, press on the Eject button on the CD-ROM and see if it opends. If ok, go into the Device manager in your Control Panel. Click the "+" beside the CD-ROM line. If you see your CD-ROM, right click on it and then Uninstall. Restart the computer and have WindowsXP reinstall the drivers for that CD-ROM. After you get back in and Windows still hasn't detected your CD-ROM, I would go download a spyware remover such as Adaware or Spybot (both free). Let us know how it goes.
