|Before jumping to formatting WindowsXP, make sure you do other things before. This seems to be a simple problems and would be a waist of time to format WindowsXP for this.|
First, when the computer is on, press on the Eject button on the CD-ROM and see if it opends. If ok, go into the Device manager in your Control Panel. Click the "+" beside the CD-ROM line. If you see your CD-ROM, right click on it and then Uninstall. Restart the computer and have WindowsXP reinstall the drivers for that CD-ROM. After you get back in and Windows still hasn't detected your CD-ROM, I would go download a spyware remover such as Adaware or Spybot (both free). Let us know how it goes.
