Cannot add new hardware

Specs: Windows XP, pent 4,1, 1gB, 1.6mHZ
Windows XP with Service Pack 3. 1.6 gHz, Pentium 4, 1gB of RAM, Compaq computer. 'Install New Hardware' reports this error message whenever opened. "You can install only one device at a time. Another device installation is underway. When it is finished you can try this Wizard again".

Problem started when installing programs and drivers that came with the install disk for an HP 6130 All-in-one printer. The printer etc. had been working fine in the past but on a reinstall the HP software hung up and since then the machine will not allow installation of any new hardware. HP has spent nearly two hours during three or four phone calls with three different techs and the problem is still there.

I need suggestions (or a new machine).

Have you tried a System Restore to a date before the HP install.

FWIW to XP users: When you click on the 'Command Prompt' you are just causing the 'Command prompt' to be displayed. This prompt gives you access to NTVDM.EXE, the 'NT Virtual DOS Manager'.
