My power button has been messing up lately.. I took off the surrounding plastic and that fixed it for the most part for 2 weeks or so. Now its completely not working. When the laptop is plugged in you can see the battery is charging so I assume the computer is still in working order I only need a way to turn it on and it appears the power button is not an option. My laptop is a Gateway NV52. Thanks!
Even though the battery may charge, if the power button doesn't work, there's little you can do to start it short of replacing the switch (button). Charging and power circuits usually work independent of each other.
