Solved Can I use both my onboard graphics card & a Nvidia Geforce?

March 12, 2012 at 20:08:04
Specs: Windows XP
I just got an Intel DZ68BC Z68 Motherboard:

I attached my 7600 and the Bios automatically disables my onboard GPU, so I can't use similtaneously my 7600 DVI and my onboard DVI. Can I change the BIOS to always have the Onboard GPU on so I can have both GPU's on at the same time? Is this safe? I just want to make sure it doesn't damage my system in anyway.

Thank you in advance!

Some motherboards allow that to happen. I doubt an Intel board will but you should read your manual. I know of AMD based boards that allow it. I don't know that you would gain much. It is primarily intended to give a boost to a low end graphics card.

If all you are concerned with is running two displays why not just run them both off the add in card?

My board actually allows me to do it, but my question is, is it safe to enable both at the same time?

"My board actually allows me to do it".

How do you know the above? Looking at the features for the board by Intel doesn't state that. See the link below.

In the cases I mention above, the 2 GPUs acted as 1 and you only used the outputs of 1 GPU to power 1 or 2 displays.

If I understand your question, you want to use outputs from both? I would have to defer to the motherboard manual in that case.

I think you will find that when you install an add in card that your integrated graphics will stop working. The safe way to find this out is to connect 1 monitor to ONLY the integrated graphics while you have the add in card installed. If the integrated continues to work then you should shut down and switch the monitor to the add in card. If it also works then try monitors on both.
