Hi Modazab,

Before upgrading the processor, I would suggest you to perform diagnostics on the system to check if it is a hardware issue. Restart the system and tap F12 for advance boot options. Select "Diagnostics" or "Utility Partition" for diagnostics. Please refer to the link mentioned below for the error codes:

If the test pass, please check the system in safe mode by tapping F8 on the dell logo.

Also, you may troubleshoot the system by performing clean boot:

Thanks & Regards

I bet it wasn't always slow? It probably became slow over time because you don't maintain it properly & it's loaded with internet garbage, toolbars, crapware, etc. How about posting the make/model of your computer? I doubt it's a Vostro V131 because I don't think they came with P4's.

According to this theDell Vostro V131 came with an Intel Core i5. Worlds away from a Pentium 4

According to this, an Inttel Core i3. Still a lot different then a Pentium 4

But first get the errors sorted out before you think about upgrading. New hardware is never going to solve software problems.

Yep. A newer processor will only draw those error messages faster.

To answer your question though, if your motherboard takes an LGA 775 processor and has a i965 or newer chipset, it'll happily run a 65nm Core 2 Duo/Quad processor.
