Hi

I have 1.5gb ( 1,536mb ) DDR PC2100

Before I start here is my setup

KT3 V ( LAN Version )
Windows XP Home Edition ( Completely Updated )
300wat PSU ( Power Supply Unit )
Athlon XP 2100+ Palomino 50C idle, 54c full load, average 53c
3x 512mb, 1,536MB ( 1.50GB ) DDR PC2100
Soundblaster live 5.1 Digital
PNY Geforce 4 TI 4200 64MB
1x 120mm case fan ( Blowing in )
1x 80mm Case fan ( Blowing Out )
1x fan blower on a PCI slot
80GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache
NTL 600K Broadband Connection
3DMark 2001 SE 9,800 Points
3DMark 2003 1,432 Points

I have this mobo set to High Performance in the bios and it overclocked my RAM from 266mhz to 270mhz, CPU from 1.73ghz to 1.76ghz which might not sound much but gained me 20% system peformance : )

My question is, is Infineon RAM good for overclocking, also is this mobo good for overclocking

Here is my mobo

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=385&MODEL=MS-6712

Have not had it long, say 1 month, can this board handle overclocking, also where can I get a heatsing for the Gold/Orange RAM controler,

Last words, as I have my Bios at High Performance, it's extremely stable, can I overclock the ram and CPU a bit more you think, as I do not want to blow anything and I am a bit scared of pushing it anymore

Thanks in advance, and to all previous replies to posts you gave me, has helped a lot

The fact that you have pc2100 and a palomino inhibits your oc'ing potential. That board is a good board and is not the weak link, and was the right price to pay given your memory and cpu. If you had pc3200 and a t-bred I would say you should have gotten an nforce2 board, but your system has good balance, which is the goal. Nothing worse than spending $100 on a link that is too strong for the other links.

It sounds like you have concerns about frying things, and there is no reason to be concerned. As long as you are prepared to reset cmos you are ready to try more aggresssive settings. Keep trying various settings and when you lock up and can't reboot, reset the cmos.

A streamlined way to repeatedly reset cmos when testing oc limits is to take out the cmos battery altogether. This battery is there to save your settings including your system clock, but as long as your psu is plugged in these settings are maintained even without a battery. By taking the battery out, you can quickly reset cmos by switching off the psu on/off switch on the back of the psu for 10 seconds.

Damage to a system due to oc testing happens when the temps get too high, which is rare. 99% of oc freezes are simply a timing overrun that is fixable by a reboot or cmos reset.

Here is a link to an overclocking forum for MSI boards running amd cpus.

Ok thanks for all your info, it has been a great help, I plan on getting a Radeon 9700Pro and a Athlon XP 3000+ Barton and some PC2700 or maybe PC3200, I don't overclock that much, only the graphic card I overclock, only decided to overclock as it was time to get more power out of this crappy CPU, the CPU though is fast and very stable, my only concern is the heat of the CPU, I have good ventilation in the system, it's just better to get a TB AMD

Thanks again for all your help, will try a bit of overclocking now : )

Dude there is no way in the world you gained 20% from a 30Mhz overclock. I don't care what you say, I've been overclocking for years and nobody will ever gain 20% from a meager 30Mhz overclock! lol!

Well I not sure what the High Performance setting adjusted completly, but I have gained a an extra 2000 points in 3DMark 2001 SE, I was suprised to, I thought I would get a little performance gain, but I got a big gain, PC Mark 2002 is another one, I scored 4300 on the CPU, now I score past 5100, but different parts of the machine do run faster than others

As long as it runs fast I am happy lol

Thanks for replying all

I wonder if the high performance bios option turns your cpu cache on and off.

I am just wondering how long you think that 300 watt power supply will be good for? If you move up in AMD.. need to move up in power supplies. I suspect that if you did not have those fans going the internal would be hot in there. Most of that heat is coming from the power supply now. Drop a 350 or 400 watt in and your internal temp will drop on average 6c.
I've seen to many 300 watts fail with just 1800 xp's. I replace pwer supply every week!
I think the corsair pc3500 is awesome memory and very stable.

Ok thanks for that Daniel, I was planning to get a new PSU when I upgraded as I know it would not handle the Athlon XP 3000+ and Radeon 9700 Pro together, it handles my current setup very well though, I can run it 24/7 with not a crash

Thanks all for your help
