Solved Can I install Windows 98 Second Edition on my system.

Apple Ibook

Specs: Windows 98 Second Edition, AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @1996MHz, and 1 GB of RAM
Hello. I wonder if my system can run Windows 98 Second Edition and connect to the internet using ethernet. And i will be using Firefox 3 as my web browser. Will it work with my graphics card, which is a ATI x800 Pro? And can i install the nVIDIA nForce package on Windows 98? And: I have a wireless network card named Gigabyte GN-WB32L-RH. It is just compatible with Windows 2000 and Windows XP+, but is it any way to make it compatible with Windows 98 Second Edition as well? Is there any patch or something?
Please don't say anything about Linux and Unix or DOSbox or VirtualBox, i won't install it anyway.
Will my hardware and software work?

"Firefox 3: The UPDATE 3.6.28 means that Firefox were last updated in April of 2012"

Regardless, Firefox 3.6 is NOT supported by Win98 or WinME:

http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo...

Neither is version 3.0:

http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo...

You need to go back to Firefox 2.0. KernelEX may allow you to run a newer version but personally, I don't like the way it works. Have you ever tried it?

http://kernelex.sourceforge.net/

"when i installed the drivers for my ATI x800 video card, i got a BSoD"

You tend to leave out details such as which driver you attempted to install & where you got it from. You should have gotten the driver from the AMD site & should have installed the "driver only", not the Catalyst Suite.

You need to go to the manufacturers support site and see if they have drivers available, if not you are out of luck.

As a point of information Windows NT3, NT4, 2000 and XP are a completely different operating system family to MS-DOS based Windows 9x

But the network card - is there any drivers for it that is compatible with 98/Me?

I know Windows 1.01-3.11 and 95, 98 and ME is based on DOS, and i actually like it better than NT. I don't know why.

NT stands for New Technology, but since NT is from 1994 or something, I won't call it new.

As DOS based operating system go back another twenty years it was new in 1994 and subsequent operating systems have been based on the same principals that underpinned Windows NT

Why on earth would you run such an old OS and browser anyway?

No you can't run it so don't bother if you don't want to hear about the options.

Hang up and live.

What the h*** are you talking about, Jefro?
I actually want to hear what you reccomend, because i have never used Windows 98 SE (or Milennium Edition) on that good hardware before.
If you don't have anything better to say than that, then please don't post replies.
Is Firefox 3 old? No, it isn't. From Oldapps.com: Firefox 3.6.28 07 March, 2012 (2 months ago)

That means Firefox 3 isn't old. But since i got the drivers for my hardware, what do you think, should I give it a shot? And try to use KernelEx to install the software for my network card which is only officaly supported by Windows 2000, XP and Vista. (That is what the manual for the network card says.)

I think Windows 98 Second Edition will be very fast on a computer with 1 GB of RAM and a AMD Athlon 2 GHz processor.

Or should i use Windows Milennium Edition? What would you reccomend?

By default Windows 98 had a 512MB Memory Limit as well as a AMD 350mhz CPU limit, which can both be patched.

Therefore saying a newer system it will run faster is cobblers, as MS-DOS dates back to the 70's and M$ gave up by 2000 as it had reached its absolute limit of development.

By all means give it a go, but buy a PCI Network Card with W98 drivers.....

Personally I preferred Millennium Edition over 98SE, but it needs to be tweaked to perform well, something I have not done for 10 years or so.

Windows 2000 is far superior IMO !

"Is Firefox 3 old? No, it isn't. From Oldapps.com: Firefox 3.6.28 07 March, 2012 (2 months ago)
That means Firefox 3 isn't old"

It means it was posted to their site in March 2012, that is NOT when it was released. Firefox is currently at version 12.

"Firefox 3.0 was released on June 17, 2008, with Version 3.5 and Version 3.6 released on June 30, 2009 and January 21, 2010 respectively. Version 4.0 was released on March 22, 2011. With Version 5.0 onwards the rapid release cycle was realised which envisions a new major version release every six weeks on Tuesday. The latest version, Firefox 12 was released on April 24, 2012."

Also.....

"Firefox 2.0.0.20 is the final version which can run under an unmodified installation of Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98, and Windows ME"

See: History of Firefox

You haven't listed your complete specs so it's difficult to give a complete answer. But you said you want to connect via an ethernet cable so why are you concerned about the wireless card? Remove it from the system. It's not supported & may cause conflicts. Does your motherboard have onboard network/ethernet?

WinME isn't going to help you. There are no Win9x/ME drivers listed for the X800 at the AMD/ATI site. Do you have an older graphics card you can drop in? Assuming you have an nForce2 based board, I see there's a legacy driver package available from nvidia:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce...

I think you understand the need to reduce the RAM amount to 512MB or less to be able to install Win98? And then the tweak that needs to be made to the System.ini file before bumping the RAM amount up again?

I weren't thinking of the drivers. Who is the best? Windows ME has a better Media Player than Windows 98 Second Edition. Windows ME also includes Windows Movie Maker. And i haven't gotten a single BlueScreen of Death when i were using Windows ME on my old Packard Bell which is designed for Windows 98 Second Edition.

What is the max of RAM on Windows ME? I assume that 512MB is also the limit for Windows Milennium Edition.

I tried Windows 2000 on my system a time back, and when i installed the drivers for my ATI x800 video card, i got a BSoD. And I had to start in safe mode and uninstall the drivers. It isn't very fun to use a computer if it has 640*480 screen resoulution.

OK, i thought that Firefox 3 was supported by Windows ME and Windows 98 but I was wrong.

Why shouldn't i download the whole Catalyst Suite?

That could very well have been your problem. You should have just gone to the manufacturer's website. As for the Catalyst Suite, do you really need it? Graphics have run & do run perfectly fine with plain old drivers without all the fancy software which is totally unnecessary for the average user.

You'll have to create a dual boot configuration. The following explanation is for XP but it should also work for Win2K. If you have the drive space available, I suggest you go with a larger partition than 6GB.

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/8790...

I'm curious where Win7 came from all of a sudden? You didn't mention anything about Win7 anywhere in this thread until now. And what are the specs of the Win7 system? It's obviously not the Pentium 2 system in your signature & I doubt Win7 would run very well with an Athlon XP & just 1GB RAM.
