can I install a GeForce FX5200 in Dell GX280

March 18, 2011 at 04:54:35
Specs: Windows XP, 2.8 GHz / 2 GB
I have an unused inno3d Graphic Controller GeForce FX 5200 and have two questions:

1) I was wondering if it would be possible to run in my old Dell Optiplex GX 280 running XP pro SP3 40GB HDD 4GB RAM

2) If that is possible, would I notice an improvement in display quality on my LG Flatron M227WDP

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thank you.

There are three versions of the Optiplex GX 280 - small mini-tower (SMT), small desktop (SD) & small form factor (SFF). The SMT will accept full size cards but the SD & SFF require low profile cards.

Your motherboard has a PCI-express x16 slot for graphics upgrades. The FX5200 wasn't available in a PCIe version, it came as AGP or standard PCI. Obviously the AGP version can't be used. The standard PCI version may be useable provided it's the proper size for the case. The FX5200 isn't a great card, but anything would be better than the crappy Intel Extreme Graphics.

Many thanks for such a quick reply, I have the small desktop version of the computer but sadly a full sized card!
