My old system was a 2.8 P4 on a ASUS P4P800 mobo that originally had 2 256mb sticks of Kingston HyperX installed in Dual Channel config. I originally had trouble getting the memory to work with the motherboard. I would get BSOD's telling me about memory errors. Eventually, I got it to work by slowing down the memory timings. Even then however, on rare occasions, I would still get the BSOD. I did do some OC'ing with this memory so that's what I contributed it too. However, I always watched my temps and never went out of 40's. Upon deciding I needed more RAM to run newer games, I purchased 2 512's of OCZ H.P. The system was only OC'd for very short periods of time after that because I couldn't get it to run stable after the new memory installation. I ran them together at the manual settings I had to make for the HyperX and naturally had the same occasional crashes. I removed the HyperX one day just for diagnostic purposes and left it out for at least a month and the crashes weren't there. Yay! Well, then they started again. I slowed the timings down and it would go away for a while, then back again. I just decided to live with it pretty much since it only happened on rare (though usually inconvenient) occasions.
Now I have my upgraded system using the old memory. I originally started it with the HyperX. It ran beautifully for at least a month. I then got bold and added my OCZ. Now my intermittent crashes are back. It happens just enough to irritate me. And with it on my new setup doing the same thing...Grrr. The only other hardware component I stole from my old system is the 120 gig Samsung HDD which has never given me any reason to doubt it.
Can anyone shed some light on this one??

I dont know if this has anything to do with it, but, it's usally a bad idea to mix ram like that.

The thing you have failed to mention in your otherwise detailed description is exactly what rating ram you are using. Telling us the brand is pointless without info on the exact specifications of the stuff. You also didn't say what model your new motherboard is. Your problems with both old system and new system may or may not relate to the ram. Have you run any ram testing progs such as Memtest86?

Teach him to fish and his wife will never forgive you.

I've learned that the very 1st thing you should do when you buy new RAM is to test it using Memtest86. And the sticks should be tested individually, not in pairs.

Ahh sorry, I did leave a little out. Oops. First, my new mobo is Gigabyte K8 Triton GA-K8NS-939 which is rated for DDR400 memory.
As far as I've read, you can mix memory as long as they're not on the same channel in Dual channel config. Both the Kingstons and the OCz's were purchased in dual channel kits.
The Kingston HyperX is PC3200 400Mhz
The OCz is PC3500 433MhzThe Kingston memory apparently had problems because they quickly came out with an updated version that was the same except for an 'a' added at the end of the serial no. I read about it on the Kingston website and they said the only difference is the default timing speeds which is what led me to slow my timings down. They said a lot of mobo's couldn't handle the fast CAS latency speeds.
I miss the good ol' days when memory was less confusing :P
No, I haven't run Memtest 86 yet. I downloaded it a while back and haven't messed with it. I just need to figure out how to run it :) I will do so and let ya know what happens.
Thanks for the advice

You just out the app on a formatted floppy and boot to it and run the app/s.
