Hi all. Ive had a problem with a second system. Everytime I shut it down, It wouldn't boot.(It would just show black screen after post). I tried switching around the IDE cables and device priority but still no joy. If I used FIXMBR, it would boot once but as soon as I shut it down, it wouldn't boot again. I knew that a CDRW drive in the system wasn't working, so I pulled all optical drives and left only the HDD. Now, it "seems" to be ok. Can a faulty optical drive cause windows not to load/boot? Even if it's on a different IDE cable? Thanks.

Is the CDRW drive on the master or slave ribbon?
Also do you have the jumpers set correctly on the drive?
Try swapping the drive with another and see if the same problem occours

Hi. I don't think it is the drive. I've installed my known to be working drive and it's failing to boot again. It seems it will only work properly when only the HDD is installed. Any ideas? I'm all out of them. Thanks

Have you tried setting the CDRW jumpers to CS (cable select)?

It's not the drive at fault. I have tried another with the same result.

It's booted 9 times in a row so far. All i've done is change primary master in bios from auto to manual. An IDE controller issue maybe?

this sounds like a bios problem. I would reset it and if that does not work, re-flash it. A bad device can indeed corrupt your bios.

You may have a bad motherboard IDE port.

Check your master/slave plugging over and over. Note that some hard drives are plugged different when alone on a cable.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!
