I have a computer I use as my answering machine. Recently I bought a Caller ID enabled modem on eBay. The modem appears to work great (perfect sound quality) except for one issue, it does not seem to report the caller id info. I have tried several programs (including IVM, my answering machine software; and Analog X Caller ID). Both programs record the call, but list the caller ID info as 'not available'. The hardware caller id device I have connected to the lien however does show the callers name and number, so it appears to be an issue with the modem. Do you have any suggestions?

For reference, the ebay item can be viewed at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6887407571&ru=http://search.ebay.com:80/6887407571_W0QQfromZR40QQfviZ1

Are you sure you have caller ID from your telco?
I set up a PC running win98 as an answering machine with up to 10 mailboxes for a non profit organization. I used CallSoft Pro. It cost $50 and it worked great. If you have caller ID service on your line, you will see the number. They offer a 30 day trail. If the pricing and the trial period are still the same, you might want to take a look at it.

Yes I have caller ID. As mentioned, my phone (all in the house in fact) display the caller when the phone rings.

Actually what I meant was, that I got software from Bellsouth for my PC ($4.95 a month) and it allowed me to see who was calling while online with options to take or ignore the call. If I took the call, I would get disconnected from the internet

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

If I connect to the modem with hyper terminal and issue the AT+VCID=1 command, the modem returns "OK". That indicates to me that the modem supports caller ID, and that it is enabled. However, when someone calls it simply says "RING" with no caller ID info attached...

Try CallSoft Pro for the 30 day free trial. If caller ID works, you'll know the other software is the problem. If it doesn't work, it's something in the line. What happens if you connect a regular phone to that line?

If connect a regular phone the caller ID works fine. In fact, there is a reagualr phone on that line and it shows the ID jsut fine where as the computer does not.
