Cable Modem Question

On a Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem..is it possible to use both the USB output and the Ethernet output at the same time....my situation is i have my computer and xbox in the same room....so insted of getting a router i can plug my computer into the USB port on the modem and the Ethernet from the modem to the xbox for xbox live....WOULD THAT WORK??? or does it output to only one connection at a time????

It probaly will work with both connections at the same time. Your modem manual will tell you.

Theres one sure way of finding out though, plug it in and try it.

Actually, from the modems web site information, both will not work at the same time. The modem would have to also have a router built into it to share its IP address with two different systems. I don't think it would even work if your ISP assigned you two static IP addresses and you set the fixed IP addresses in two differet systems.

Yes, you can use both to attach multiple computers. The USB port will support only one user and the Ethernet port (with a hub or switch) can support multiple users, to a maximum of 31 attached computers. Please check with your ISP or Cable Operator to see how many users they allow on cable modems.

I have fixed a few units in the field that were connected both ways at the same time by the cable co themselves. It DID work but both machines were extremely slow. I don't believe it was intended to work that way.
