Buying a TFT monitor

Can anyone help me to understand the specs on TFT monitors and what to look for when buying one? ie do i need a high response rate, do i need video-s facility, do i need high colour resolution etc etc

You should get the highest response rate you can afford, especially if you use the monitor for playing games.
Do you mean S-Video which is a function of the graphics card. Nothing to do with the monitor. S-Video is used for connecting things like video cameras and TVs to your graphics card. TFT monitors have either analogue inputs the same as a CRT monitor or digital inputs, some have both. If you want to use digital inputs you need a graphics card that as digital outputs.
All monitors, whether analogue or digital will have a 32 bit colour capability. What you get is a function of the graphics driver, again, nothing to do with the monitor.
