I apologize in advance if this forum doesn't pertain to my problem.

I have recently moved to Korea from the US and have brought my desktop computer with me. Here in Korea, they use 220v instead of 110v so I had to buy a voltage converter. However, after I plugged everything in, I turned on my computer, and after about 20 minutes, a burning smell started to come out from the voltage converter. Then a little while later, my computer froze and shut down by itself. What does this mean? Do I need a bigger voltage converter? Is my computer fried?

Buying a voltage converter may have been not such a hot(no pun) idea. it actually might be your converter burning. Converters are used for smaller and lighter appliances like toasters not intended for prolonged use. Computers should use voltage "transformers" instead which are used for more continuous electronics like tv's an your pc. Transformers are more expensive than converters.

does your computer boot at all now? if it runs for a while then shuts down, its probably your converter. Hope this helps.

You could just buy a computer power supply locally and replace yours and that way you wont need to worry about anything going wrong. Also, there may be a voltage selector on the back of your PSU anyway so no voltage converter would be needed.

you dont have to. you can set the voltage on the back of the PSU. 220v or 110v.
