Howdie folks.
Alrighty well for the past 2-3 days i had been experiencing a faint burning smell, i should of took it a little more seriously but thinking it was just dust or warming up, i left it. About an hour ago the computer suddenly died, the smell became real strong. I have a strong suspicion it's the PSU, getting up and close to the tower reveals the smell was indeed coming from the PSU.
My question is could other components be fried? The computer is only a few months old, i had it custom built. I suspect the PSU cant handle the load. Any help is greatly appreciated.

All of the stuff is the cheapest junk on the planet. And why not, it isn't meant to last too long anyway.

I learned a long time ago, once you let the magic smoke out it is broken. Some technical reason I'd guess.

I doubt the PSU would smoke because it "can't handle the load". It is more likely to have some overcurrent crowbar circuit.

The smell is the place to start. Replace that. Try to boot system.

IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBT ABOUT THE SAFETY THEN DISPOSE OF IT OR HAVE A PROFESSIONAL REPAIR IT.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

IF you had your system built by a reputable shop, it *should* still be under warranty. If a friend built it for you, you may be out of luck. It's not uncommon that a PSU will fry other hardware when it blows. Before taking it to the shop, I suggest you open the case & get the info off the PSU label (brand name, overall wattage & rated amperages on the +3.3v, +5v & +12v rails), then post it. One of us will be able to tell you if the PSU is/was a cheapie. As for the rest of your components, you won't know until you get them tested.

Failing power supplies are common and can cause your symptoms.
Check your PS.
See response 4 in this:
http://www.computing.net/hardware/w...

Any PS can fail, but el-cheapo PSs are a lot more likely to, and when they do, el-cheapo PSs are a lot more likely to damage the mboard or anything connected to it.
If you are fortunate, replacing the PS will restore your system to working fine again.
If you are not fortunate, you will have to replace something else as well if you still want to use the system.
Certain brands of el-cheapo PSs, such as Bestec, are well known to be likely to trash the mboard and perhaps other components as well.
Other than those, if you have to replace something, it's usually the mboard, and the ram, cpu, and hard drive(s) are fine. Some PSs failing damages the floppy drive, optical drives, and cards in slots, the likelyhood in that order, but usually they're fine too.
