Hi. I would like to know exactly which disc's to use to burn DvD's so I can watch them on my Dvd player.
Can i use rewriteable disc's? Dvd+rw, Dvd-Rw?

Or do i use DVD-r?

Also, How would i burn movies which i have downloaded? They are in Sections in Winrar - I extracted them but it was an .avi file - no .bin or .cue. so do i convert the avi file to something else? I have never burned a cd/dvd. ever. so im confused as hell. thx

videohelp.com is a good place to start.

A quote from the above site answers your first question:

DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 93% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 80% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-R and DVD-RW supports single side 4.37 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double sided 8.75 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by DVDForum.

DVD+R and DVD+RW
DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 89% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 79% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD+R and DVD+RW supports single side 4.37 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 8.75 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by the DVD+RW Alliance.

The same site has information on converting those AVIs to DVD video, but I don't think it's worth the trouble.

In other words, check which formats your DVD player supports and go from there.

Check at this site to find romat compatibility if you don't havhttp://www.videohelp.com/dvdrecorderse the manual. We are assuming you want to play the DVDs on a stand alone player, not a DVDrom in your computer.

That should have been "format" in my last response. Also the site I referenced is a good place to learn how to create the DVD.
