Have a prob which I never had before on same system.....When I try to burn a dvd, the pc will shut down part way thru...I used to get away with burning at 2x but now even this seems temperamental...
Happened since buying Maxel dvd's (maybe just coincidence in timing) so thought it must be them...so tried another brand..tdk....same prob..surely both makes would'nt make the pc die?.
so bought a new dvd writer...same prob...
I use Nero to burn...I unistalled it in case corrupted & installed a newer version..7.
Still the pc will shut down when burning.
Only thing I can think of is the power supply but don't want to be spending even more cash on possible dead ends.
I don't have any probs with running intensive games (witcher etc..) with dual cards..so surely burning a dvd would'nt draw more current which would cause an overload?
At a loss so any help would be appreciated..Andy.

Install a temperature monitor and observe temperatures while making a recording. Maybe CPU temp is going high or temp cutdown point was set too low in BIOS.

My brother had the same problem.
I tried his burner drive on another computer - it worked fine. The +12, +5, and +3.3 voltage current readings for the PS in the bios Setup were within specs - it was an excellent brand - Antec. It tried a used PS, and his computer had no problem with the same burner drive. What was probably wrong with the PS was it no longer reacted properly to changes in load on the system. Since the warranty was still in effect, he RMAed it, and the same model has been working fine in the same system since.
If you check out your existing PS, you may or may not find obvious symptoms that it is failing. If you can try a used PS from another computer you have, or borrow one, you don't need to take the risk of buying another PS before confirming whether that is the problem or not.
Failing power supplies are common and can cause your symptoms.
Check your PS.

Tnx suatcini & tubesandwires...Don't think it would be my cpu getting too hot as it gets put under much higher loads along with fans going into overdrive without any probs..(intensive games)...Hardly think burning a dvd would put exessive demands on it..tnx for thoughts tho..(I have a visual display anyway with a temp probe)
Will go down the psu route in the near future when I'm next desperate to burn & have no choice..Will post update at time..
Tnx again for taking the time to reply. Andy.

"Hardly think burning a dvd would put exessive demands on it.."
Take a look at the current cpu load in Task Manager while you're trying to burn a DVD. There may be more load on it than when you're playing a game.
......Try the DVD drive on another computer - it could be defective.
......Your problem could be a software problem.
Win XP is set by default to automatically reboot when it encounters an unrecoverable error.
To have XP possibly display an error message you can investigate instead of the computer rebooting:
1. Click Start, and then right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
4. Under System failure, click on the small box beside Automatically restart to remove the checkmark.
5. Click OK, and then click OK.If you then get an error message, look at all of it's details.

Tried a third DVD-rom from another pc & turns out the new replacement was coincidentally defective...Works perfectly with third dvd...have been changing cables...pulling my hair out etc! Oh well back to normal now..
Tnx again for time & advice....appreciated! Andy.
