hey guys..

I hav this real old comp and i wanted to take some parts out of it and put it in a not so old comp for my gf. Anyway the HD has Win98 installed. If i was to take this out and chuck it in a comp with specs..

-Celeron 400Mhz
-380mb Ram
-4Mb PCI video

Would it be able to recognise the new hardware or will it stuff up?

I also hav Win2000, would it be better to format and install Win2000 or would 98 be better? I dunno much about older OS and any help will be apreciated.

The comp is only for word processing and maybe some flash and photoshop work, NO GAMES.

Thanks..

I agree. I doubt the 98 drive would even boot up in a different machine unless you reistalled it. And then if you're gonna reistall an OS anyways go with 2000. 380mb ram should run 2000 just fine for what you want it for...even though the processor is a little slow.

No harm in trying though.

It should be easier shouldnt it as ive read that Win98 needs a seperate boot-up disk?

And yeah some other ppl that ive talked to said Win98 was better. But i think ill go with the new Win2000 install.

Thanks for replys..

I would pick 2000 over 98 with that much RAM.

If you have the drivers for the devices in the "not so old" computer, you should be able to do it. If you don't have them, they probably aren't hard to get.

If the HDD has WIN98SE on it, it would be worth while to try. If it has WIN98FE, I'd probably format and install a new OS.

If you go into device manager on the PC your taking the HD out of and remove all devices, when you put it in the new one it will plug and play at least some hardware and you'll need drivers for the rest. Alternativly put it in the one your building start in safe mode then install the correct drivers.
w2k is very sluggish on older hardware compared to w98 so I'd recomend 98 although with that much RAM you can get away with w2k but it wont perform as well.
Personaly I wouldnt use either, I'd download and install mandrake its free, just as easy to install and comes with loads off apps including ones compatable with MS office.

I'd give the HDD with 98 a shot...if it doesn't work out, you can always fdisk/format & install Win2k later...

Try this:

Install the HDD, bootup & get into the BIOS...make sure to confirm the new HDD configuration. Then reboot again & go directly into safe mode.

Go to Start > Run, type "regedit" & press enter. Find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE & expand it. You'll see a subkey called ENUM. Delete it. Also delete the other subkey called Hardware. Reboot. Deleting the ENUM/Hardware keys will force the PC to look for devices. Make sure you have the diver disks handy....

...there is no spoon...

the only thing out of your list that you would need drivers for is teh video card if it isn't onboard.... you would probably need drivers for some of the motherboard components, including sound, video, ect...

shouldn't be to hard to find.. depending if you know what motherboard the computer has.. if not see if you can get a program called aida32 it will tell you what the motherboard is and everything else..so you can get the drivers you need...

I'll put the program up on my webspace if I can so you can download it easier
