Building new system.

Specs: Windows 7, 2.4Ghz Athlon XP / 1.5GB
I've built my fair share of computers, but lately
(the past ~2 years) I haven't really been
keeping up on new tech/whatever, just brief
reading about different processors, etc.

Anyways, I've been wanting to build a new
system for a while now and I need some
suggestions. I have my drives, case and PSU
taken care of (550W PSU, 24pin ATX, 30A
+12v), I just need suggestions on semi-cheap
parts for my build.

Right now I'm running a 2.4Ghz Athlon XP with
1.5GB RAM / Radeon HD 2600 Pro AGP 8x

I'd like to be running a 2+ core CPU, Intel or
AMD, though I'd prefer AMD personally, a
matching board, and memory suggestions,
and a graphics card decent enough for some
light to mid-range gaming (ie, Sims 3, Halo 2,
etc). and 2-4GB RAM I'd like to build this
system for around $300 USD, maybe a little
more, any suggestions on good reliable parts
for this build?

cpu athlons x3 435, graphic card ati radeon hd 4670 with gddr3, motherboard look 4 good review board with amd chipset 785g. Ram it depends on mobo choice and be carefully when choosing. Go to board manufacture website for supported ram. For intel system u can look 4 pentium dual core e series or pentium e series or c2d. Intel p45,p43 chipset and don't buy intel board.
