first questions: will this motherboard work with a AMD 3000+ 400FSB? http://www.excaliberpc.com/product_info.php?cPath=181_338&products_id=2329

i'm building a new PC, and trying to keep the price 810$ or below. this is my parts list and best price i can find for the parts. the total price comes to more than i can afford, i am using googlegear, newegg and pricewatch to find these prices. can any of you help me find a better price?

3000+ amd XP 400FSB - 280$
nforce2 motherboard - 60$
1 gb dual channel DDR400 cl2.5 - 180$
DVD/CDRW combo - 55$
GeForce FX 5600 Ultra Pro - 160$
80gb ATA133 HD - 80$
500w case (includes fans) - 50$

would very much appreciate any help!

you could save $200 by getting a 2500+ and setting the multiplier to 10.5 ad the fsb to 200 so it becomes a 3000+. Odds are about 90% it would work. They are the same chip but with different labels and default settings.

uhm u would do that in BIOS right? dunno how to do it but i suppose i could learn. the 2500 barton has a fsb of 333 and u can get the 3000+ with 400FSB, would not the 3000+ be better no matter what?

The 3000+ and 2500+ are exactly the same chip, with amd guessing that the 3000+ is better because it was made from closer to the center of the wafer. But for a while now (a year?) the lowest rated amd cpus have been overclocking to identical speeds as the highest rated amd chips. Its as though their manufacturing process has gotten to the point that every chip is the same, the only difference being the 2500+ and up has more L2 cache.

Try downloading your motherboard manual and seeing how to do what it says in post 2.
