CPU/Ram: Pentium IV
Comment:

I am getting ready to build myself a new computer. I will be using this computer mainly for video editing and gaming.

Here are the parts I have chosen, but have not yet bought so nothing is set in stone, yet. Please let me know if they are good/bad choices and if you are aware of anything that is better than what I have down. Advice, personal experiences with these products, cheaper prices etc. are always welcome.

Processor: Intel Pentium IV 2.6 GHz, 800MHz FSB, 512K Cache, Hyper Threading Technology ($174 @ www.newegg.com)

Motherboard: ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe
Supported CPU: Socket 478 Pentium 4/Celeron Processors
Chipset: Intel 875P + ICH5R
FSB: 800/533/400MHz
RAM: 4x DIMM support Dual Channel DDR400/333/266 Max 4GB
IDE: 2x UltraDMA 100, 1x UltraDMA 133 up to 6 Devices
Slots: 1x AGP 8X, 5x PCI
Ports: 2xPS2, 1xCOM, 1xLPT, 1xSPDIF Out, 1xLAN, 2xIEEE1394(Rear 1), 8xUSB2.0(Rear 4), Audio
Onboard Audio: AD1985 6-Channel CODEC
Onboard LAN: Intel CSA 82547EI Gigabit Ethernet

Onboard 1394: VIA 1394 Controller
Form Factor: ATX
($209.95 @ www.computers4sure.com)

Memory (1 stick): Kingston 512 MB, 400MHz DDR PC3200 DIMM CL2.5 ($115 @ www.kingston.com)

Hard Drive: Maxtor 40GB and Maxtor 80GB (already own these, not sure what models)

Video Card: PNY Verto GeForce 4 128MB AGP (already own)

Case/PowerSupply: Generic ATX Case with Award 300 watt Power Supply (already own) (Is 300 watts enough power?)

Floppy Drive: Standard Floppy (already own)

Video Capture Card: Hauppauge WinTV-PRV 350 PCI 990 ($174 @ www.newegg.com)

Modem: Standard 56K PCI Modem for Dial-Up (already own)

Sound Card: Built into motherboard. (Should I invest in a better one?)

Ethernet: Built into motherboard.

DVD-Burner: I was looking at some of the multi-format drives like the LG Super Multi DVD Writer (GSA-4040B) and the Sony DRU-510A. Today, however, I found the Lite-On LDW-811S, which is 8X. Are there other 8X DVD-Burners out? Also, any advise is welcome here.

Thanks.

I am not as acquainted with Intel as I am with AMD, but I might suggest minimally 350 watt power supply with the heavy duty components you are spec'ing, and 400 would be best. Don't forget that all kinds of goody add-ons will be coming out in the future that you may want to install, and 300 Watts puts you on the bottom rung of the power ladder. Other than that, sounds like a great setup.

If you are going to go with an Intel dual channel MB I would suggest you take advantage of the one area that setup can outshine AMD. Install 2 sticks of ram in the dual channel mode. 512MB probably isn't enough for editing anyway. For a less costly alternative, consider an Athlon XP solution. If you are interested, I am sure others will make suggestions, if you solicit opinions.
