uh, I believe it was...

Voodoo cards are antiques. 3Dfx went out of business a LONG time ago & Voodoos haven't been manufactured in years! Why would you build a P4 system & install a video card that's 8 yrs old?

Just to clarify, it WAS a joke. A voodoo1 card is 4MB of video memory that piggybacks off of a primary card using a lookback cable. You wouldn't want it on a newer system (unless you are going to install Win98 and play Quake 1)....btw, that last part was a joke too.

Vodoo does not support anything in the modern day( Like direct X9) .. Spend 30 dollars more and get a half way decent card. If you plan to get a vodoo card then get a system with PIII and 128 MBs of ram, Because anything else will be over kill for those kinds of cards.

frigidaire,
Video and Audio have vastly improved since the days of "Voodoo" to the point where, depending on your usage, "onboard" video and audio rival some of the best "cards".
Given your price range, you may want to consider a system built around an "integrated" motherboard (such as ASUS P5GD1-VM). Go with 512mb memory(Crucial.com), and, the best "Pentium" you can afford(not Celeron) after considering the other system components.

what is the exchange rate from canadian to american? if I know how much that is, I can have a better idea of what you can get. As for the voodoo, the first one was a 4mb card..I still have it, DONT get one of those. You can get a 128MB GeForce 5200fx doe $30 at tigerdirect.com that will blow away ANY of the voodoo lines 3/4/5 whatever!

frigidaire,

You obviously aren't familiar with computer hardware & your sense of humor needs some work too...LOL!

You came here for free advice & you'll get some helpful responses if you'd just be realistic. It appears you already have your mind made up about the Voodoo card & I can almost guarantee you won't get a single reply supporting your choice (unless it's another joke).

Why don't you start by telling us what you wanna use you system for? gaming? internet? word processing? CAD? Do you prefer Intel over AMD or doesn't it matter?

I recommend you choose an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ socket 939 processor, nForce4-based motherboard, 512 MB of DDR SDRAM, a 160 GB SATA hard disk drive, DVD±RW burner, 128 MB NVIDIA GeForce 6600 graphics card and a 400W ATX tower case.

Make sure the motherboard has PCI Express slots, Serial ATA (SATA), USB2 and is for socket 939 processors.

All in all, this will probably be well within your budget. As everyone has said here, Voodoo is an antiquated chipset that would be a pile of steaming s--- for 3D performance in today's games.

But, saying that, you haven't even told us the purpose of your computer (as jam so right said) which leaves us guessing as to what you want exactly.

if you want to build a bidget machine that will run windows xp pro/home very well, get a motherboard with onboard video, or if you want a halfway decent gaming machine, get like an ati radeon 9200 or an nvidia equivalent card, or if you really want some power try getting a refurbished ati radeon 9800 pro or the x800. im using a comp with onboard video and its got 64mb and it runs some games alright, but its lack of power is noticable. i had an ati radeon 7000 in this that i payed 50 bucks at plug and play. (canadian store www.yesplay.com) iv now had this computer for 2 and a half years, its an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ (1.5ghz Benchmark but runs like 1.8) 640MB of ram, SiS Motherboard with onboard video, lan, sound, modem and an 80GB hard drive. not exactly a gaming computer, but it does what i want it to, like run virtual pc, because this is more of a music server for my laptop really. i can play a few games and they run very well. like unreal tournament and stuff like that. but im happy with this computer.

kindest regards, brian
