Total cost of ownership is less with most Lasers. The quality of text is usually better. consumables last longer and don't go bad as easily.
Color photos don't usually come out as good. Initial cost is higher.
Business class color lasers are usually must cheaper on consumables than smaller units. The downside is they are bigger units and cost more initially. Depends on how much you print.
In regard to photos you can get real prints made at most any place that does it for less cost than either method and should last longer. Just copy the files to optical disk and take to store. Now you have nice prints and a backup of the pictures too.
