Remove Norton and update your BIOS

Thanks for the reply. Don't have Norton so that is not a problem. Could you point me towards a BIOS updating resource? I can google myself but I am not sure which is the most reliable option. Thanks!

I have downloaded the latest BIOS version but not sure how to upgrade. It has exe files but no instructions/documentation. One exe is called 1558_A12 and other is Win_1194. Thanks!

Forget about a BIOS update, it is very unlikely that is the problem. A BIOS update is something you only do at the very last resort when all other possibilities have been exhausted.

Read this:

Firs thing to do is to run a memory checker.

Have you checked the Windows 7 reliability history to see what that says.

Thanks for the reply Stuart. I haven't run the memtest yet, will have to get a blank CD for it first.

The reliability history just says "Windows was not properly shutdown" with no additional information provided.

Many people have been having this issue with the studio1558. There is either a problem with the vbios or something with your antivirus program. The vbios will be updated with the bios update from dell. So try to update your bios and un-install your antivirus software.

To update your bios and vbios just run the installer that you downloaded from dell. Should be the a12.exe.

You may also want to update your ATI drivers, that can be downloaded from dell under the display or graphics section.
