Broken sound card???

Specs: Windows XP
I think my SigmaTel sound card is broken but before I replace it I thought I'd see if anybody has any suggestions on here....

My sound card was working perfectly fine up until around a couple of months ago when the sound started becomming distorted. This problem occurs with every software I try and every kind of file type (ie. mp3, wav, avi, mpeg etc). It is like somebody has been playing around with some kind of graphic equaliser (which I haven't!)... On some audio tracks the vocals are too quiet and the music is too loud and on other tracks its the other way round!

I have tried updating the sound card drivers, replacing the speakers, and even attaching headphones directly to the sound card but the problem persists.

Can anyone suggest anything else?

Is it an actual card or is it onboard sound? When you upgraded the drivers, did you uninstall the old ones 1st? Did you make any software or hardware changes right around the time this problem began?

It's probably an onboard card, a pci card will be required to replace it.
