Around 2 weeks ago my PC began to not boot up, the fans would all power on but the usb devices and monitor would get no power and wouldnt come on at all, the PC would then stay on doing nothing for about 20mins before resetting inself and doing the same again.
I had a similar problem before so thought it was either the mobo or psu and have since bought both and neither of these fixed it and the exact same problem remains,
I really need my PC for work and its my only source of watching TV and entertainment at home so im desperate to fix it, I dont want to send it to a repair place yet.
Basically I was wondering which out of the memory, gfx card and cpu would most likely cause this problem? I do have 2 memory sticks and have tried switching them around and removing static. Ive also tried everything i can think of and nothings worked so im left with it being a component problem
Thanks alot for the help and sorry for my probable lack of detail or clarity as im writing this pretty quickly on my lunch break

the computer will restart automatically if the BIOS is corrupted --- please reset it using the CMOS battery ( or CLR_CMOS jumper, if desirable )

Ive tried that on the old mobo and then bought a new mobo and tried it on that too just incase, its not the bios im pretty sure of that, would a broken CPU stop the display from showing or the usb devices from lighting up on startup ?
thanks for the help

yes, here is a test for it:
please take out all ram from the computer and try to boot
do you hear any beeps ?

For some bizzare reason my case doesnt have a mobo spk cable so i currently have no way of hearing any beeps from the mobo, this is a problem im trying to fix but havent found anywhere to get a single spk case cable

no...you don`t need speakers...it should beep without any peripherals
if you DON`T hear any beeps, then you can experience: CPU/MoBo/PSU problem

ah ok, I spoke to someone at a local PC repair place and he said i needed to get a spk cable for the mobo to hear the beeps and find out whats causing it,
In that case ive already bought a new psu and mobo so does that still leave the cpu as a possibe problem and not the graphics card ?
thanks

if it was the graphics card, it would have beep ( two long and one short )
so...the only thing left is the CPU --- you can try some other before buying a new one

I'm betting on a bad hard drive. Try swapping it out with another. If starts to post, even if the os is the wrong one, then that's where your problem lies.
And wire for the onboard beeps through the speaker doesn't sound (no pun intended) right.

If you booted a PC with the hard drive disconnected shouldnt you still get a signal on the monitor trying to bootup then coming up with an error ?

it`s not the HDD...however, you can try booting without a HDD, but it probably won`t help --- bad HDD, WON`T prevent your computer from starting...

Thanks alot for the replies, Ive ordered a new CPU, worst case scenario is that the CPU isnt the problem but then I still have an upgraded CPU so it will be a good excuse.
Thanks again

Bad HD WILL keep you computer from starting.

I just went through this in school. A bad hard drive will keep it from booting. We got nothing from this computer I assumed psu. The customer just wanted her data off the drive so we pulled it and used an adapter to transfer the data to her other computer. When we did this all we could see was the manufacturers repair partition. We could not access the main (C:) drive at all. It gave us the option to format the drive but when attempted we just got an error.
We placed an old drive in her comp. and it booted or rather asked us to install an OS but at any rate it was the drive that was bad.Likely

OK so I got the CPU today and its still not fixed, exactly the same problem again, no responce from Monitor, usb, or even a ps2 keyboard, none get power or light up so far ive got a new
psu
mobo
cpuso all this leaves is HD, Graphics card or memory, my HD is by far the oldest of these and the one i would of guessed would of gone next, but can a HD stop everything else from being displayed? I also tried it without the HD even plugged in and got the same problem.
So would memory or graphics card cause this problem ? thanks

um...let me explain...if it was the memory, it would have given long beeps...if it was the graphics card...it would have given 1 long and 2 short beeps
you can read about it...http://www.pantherproducts.co.uk/Articles/Motherboard/BIOSbeep.shtml
read the "Award BIOS section"

ok but my motherboard never ever beeps, I spoke to one person on the phone and he said it would be because my motherboard could need the SPK cable found in cases to act as the speaker for the motherboard as some motherboards dont have one built in,
If its not the motherboard, psu or CPU then and my motherboard would definately beep then does that mean it would be the HD ?

no...the HDD can`t do this...several suggestions:
1. Reset BIOS using the battery
2. Try new RAM
3. Try new GPU

Ok thanks, just tried removing the battery for 5mins with no effect so I think ill gamble [again] on either buying new RAM or a new gfx card .. dno which one thought and im reluctant to pay £60 p/h on labour + parts alone at a repair shop
Thanks for the help again

sorry to say...but you`re right...you spent a lot of money with NO effect...you can ty buying RAM first --- it`s cheaper

It's probably the hd. In spite of what probfixer says, this is exactly the type of symptoms a bad hd will give you.

@ seawatch: read this and please STOP saying the HD is bad:

Those posts do not address the problem.
