Ok so i just got a computer from a friend and i have been having trubble with it. it will start up and every thing will be going good, no odd sounds or anything like that. THEN suddenly it will go into standby, i turned off standby and still nothing. i thought this might be a virus so i re installed windows and it still does that. so i was thinking it might be my motherboard or my PSU. What do you think

I think it may be a setting in the BIOS. Tap the f2 key or del key on startup could also be the f10 key. it depends on the motherbard on how to get into the BIOS.

You shouldn't be using standby (or hibernate) on a desktop machine anyway...that's not what they were designed for.
When you reinstalled Windows, did you format 1st? If not & there was a virus, the virus is most likely still there. What happens if you boot into safe mode?
