Comment:

I have a dialup subscription, but not a broadband subscription; I don't have a 56Kb dial-up modem and don't want to buy one if I can avoid it; can I use the broadband modems which do have, to get 56Kb dial up ?
Please don't think that I have the question 'back-to-front' as would be more likely. I'm NOT asking about using a dial-up modem for broadband.

You need a dial-up modem. Internal Winmodems are about $10. External hardware modems which connect via the serial port are preferrable but are more expensive.

You can also get USB dial-up modems that are priced somewhere between the other options.

USB is not as good as a serial port modem.

make sure you get the power adapter & serial cable, included. Don't pay more than $20, including shipping. You won't need drivers for XP or Linux

True serial modems rock on dialup. Mostly due to their onboard controllers.
