I am having a problem with booting my PC. It
has been working fine, and I did not try to
clock or modify the computer recently in any
way. Lately, it will reboot automatically
like once every two days out of no where.
Today I was using it and it rebooted, then
during the boot, I received a blue screen
(Windows 2000). I didn't pay many attention
to it and just rebooted computer again. Now
when I turn on the computer, there is no
bootup BEEP. Everything sounds like it is
running fine though. When I turn the
computer off though, ONE of the two hard
drives makes a BEEP (when the comp power is
turned off). If I unplug that hard drive and
boot up the computer, it sounds like it is
loading the other HDD (but there is no
bootup beep nor does the monitor turn on.
When I turn it off, there is no beep. So I
know the BEEP sound when turning off the
computer is coming from my 30gig hard drive
and not the 40gig hdd.I have no clue what the problem is. I don't
see any reason why my hard drive could
possibly die on me. Would it even be making
that BEEP noise when I turn the comp off if
it was dead? Now that I think of it, I lied. I did
(earlier) in the day apply some more artic
silver to my CPU. But I don't think that is
the problem. I have done that a million
times and it had been working fine after I
did that again today.Any help would be appreciated.

Too much Thermal paste is not good.
I think maybe you have too much?Clean it all off and reapply it properly(thinly).
There are instructions on how to do this at arcticsilver's website.

Thermal paste doesn't seem to be the problem...my old roomate tried to help me but thinks it is a CPU problem...he feels the CPU has fried...he told me that the CPU is one of the first components that receive power and if there is nothing responding, then I won't hear the bootup beep...I didn't kill (apply a lot) it with thermal paste the first time either...just the same amount as I always do...I want to keep trying, but afraid I will fry the botherboard as well...
there IS a little white mark on the top of my CPU...last night was the first time I had ever noticed it...I am wondering if it is a crack or anything...the location of that white mark is where pressure is applied to lock the fan down...I am beginning to think that I may have scratched or cracked (albeit small) a part of the CPU...
I will be heading out today to buy another CPU and hopefully it will work...
thanks

I think your hard drive may be dead, if it makes the beep and does not read....most likely either one of the heads or readers in the hard drive is either damaged or distroyed...the best way to test this is unplug your good harddrive and make your probleam har drive the primary....if it won't load or show any information...then it's dead, if you can read from it then theres an underlying probleam...that of wich I have no clue how to solve.....I hope everything works out for ya...good luck

The hard drive that beeps is already the primary hard
drive. It is the primary and has the OS on it. As of right
now, I don't really have a way of testing the hard drive.
Even then though, shouldn't the computer make a startup
beep regardless of whether the hard drive is attached or
not? Usually when you attach a new hard drive, you
receive on screen information maybe saying that the hard
drive needs to be formatted or that no hard drive is
present. When I say that I don't see anything on screen, I mean the
monitor does not even turn on. I don't even receive the
BIOS screen at any point. So it doesn't seem that anything
is being read. The part that confuses me is why one of my
hard drives beeps when I shut everything off. I will try this
new processor and fan when it comes hopefully
tommorow or wednesday. My old roomate feels that the
processor may be the problem and that the white scratch
or crack on it could be the cause of the problem.-Chaintech 7NIF2 MB

Are you sure it is your HD that makes the beep?
Remove all your pci cards etc so that you only have the bare minimum, mobo graphics hd.
See what happens then

Yes I know it is my 30gig hard drive...I mean I know exactly the hard drive that is making that beep. I unplugged that hard drive though and tried it. Still no signal to the monitor nor startup beep as it usually does.
I will try removing everything when I get back home. Last night I only tried it without either hard drive, without the memory, without the AGP video card...right now I still have my TV Tuner/Video Capture card, sound card, soundblaster audigy 2 plat live drive, and two optical drives...so when I get back home, I will try it without all of those...
if shipping is what it is supposed to be, my new processor and fan should be here sometime tommorow (I overnighted it)...my CPU was getting hot at 70 degrees before I applied for arctic silver 3 to it...it is an AMD Athlon XP1700+ Tbred B...a 1.4ghz that I have had clocked to 2.002ghz..now before you think that I just clocked it and something happened...that is not the case...I built my computer last Summer (July2003)...and have gone 14 months with it clocked up to 1.8ghz and like 3 months ago clocked it to 2.0 where it has been running fine until now...
I am not sure if that 70 degrees got to it or if that little white mark on the CPU came from pressing down the fan when locking it in place...or whether that mark is even the problem...
but when I get back home, I will barebones the system and see what happens...
thanks

I just received my new CPU and fan today...installed it
etc...but no luck...the 30gig hard drive still makes a loud
beep when I turn the power off....before when I had both
HDs hooked up, neither of them stared...when I had the
40gig hooked up by itself...it started...now neither of
them are starting no matter how I have them hooked up...I
would also think that I would get a BIOS screen regardless
of whether a hard drive is attached or not...I also broke
the plastic part of one of my IDE cables that plugs into the
hard drive when trying to take it out (go figure..)...my luck
is running thin...I don't know what the problem is...:(

ok, now the 40gig hard drive is working again...but still
the same problems...someone suggested that my lithium
battery on my motherboard may be dead? is that easily
replaceable?-Chaintech 7NIF2 MB

I don't think that your battery is causeing the problem, perhaps try to attch that 30gig HDD to another working computer, either as the master or a slave (and make sure you change the jumper settings on the drive). If the drive works, walla- its not anything to do with the drive (but I seriously think there is)
But if you really would like to replace the battery just for the hell of it, go ahead....
To replace the lithium battery is fairly simple- just make sure you buy the right kind... Carefully pop it out of the MOBO (you should be able to see the battery immediately when you open the case) and then bring the battery with you when you go to buy a new one and match it up. When you get home, pop the new one back in and trash the old one (or recycle). Your time may be reset but thats the least of your problems.
