I'm having problems booting up my PC.
Basically, my Pc wasn't working, I figured it was a motherboard/CPU problem so I bought a new motherboard, CPU and RAM.
Motherboard: PC-CHIPS M848A (Socket A)
CPU: AMD Athlon 2000+
RAM: 256Mb DDR PC2700 333mHzI also bought a new video card:
PNY G-FORCE FX5200 (128Mb DDR)I can't seem to find any wires labelled Speaker (for the system speaker), so I don't know if it's beeping at me.
When I power up, I get no signal to my monitor, it goes green and then into standy mode.
Can hear the HD powering up, then stopping. Fans continue to operate.
I've tried everything I can think of:
- Cleared CMOS using jumper
- Taken all cables/cards off motherboard except power cable for motherboard and video card
- Tried changing video cards
- Moved RAM into different slots
- Tried just IDE cable for HD
- Tried just cable for floppy
- Tried everything plugged inI'm going mad. Any ideas????
EXTRA INFO - HISTORY:
The original problem was that the computer would sound like it was booting up, then the HD light would stay on, and then just freeze. No output to screen. So i changed the RAM, but no joy. I have another computer with the same M/Board and CPU, so I swapped CPU's to see if this was the problem.
Unfortunately, the CPU from Comp1 fried the m/board on Comp2!! Tried putting original CPU from Comp2 back in, but didn't work. So bought 2 new m/boards, processors and ram.
Tried it all in Comp1, but got the problems mentioned. Moved it from Comp1 to Comp2, same problems.
Messed about for hours on Comp2, and suddenly worked. Said the CMOS settings were wrong, so went in and changed a few.
The only problem is, I don't know what I did to make it work! Comp1 still driving me mad.

Does anyone mind if I rip this up? Ok, lets see if we can help ya.
"I'm having problems booting up my PC.
Basically, my Pc wasn't working, I figured it was a motherboard/CPU problem so I bought a new motherboard, CPU and RAM."Um, you didn't really tell us how you came to this conclusion. Since your posting now, my first thought is that the problem you had is still with you on the new system. But lets read on ...
"Motherboard: PC-CHIPS M848A (Socket A)
CPU: AMD Athlon 2000+
RAM: 256Mb DDR PC2700 333mHzThis is an ok system, little light on the memory, and your sure this board is a 333FSB? I haven't checked.
"I also bought a new video card:
PNY G-FORCE FX5200 (128Mb DDR)"Again you got an ok video card. You were wise not to get a 256 card, but this card alone has more memory than your system after you load windows. Chances are your not going to be using it tons compared to your regular memory.
"I can't seem to find any wires labelled Speaker (for the system speaker), so I don't know if it's beeping at me."Hehe, ok your showing your age now....todays systems don't come with speakers. You plug them in the sound card, like normal speakers, outside the case.
I'm sure you could have one as 'some' still support the connection, but not all.
So forget about this and plug in some speakers.
"When I power up, I get no signal to my monitor, it goes green and then into standy mode."
This is not good. First thing I'd do is go get a really good power supply and replace whatever hard disk your using, and try with another one.
"Can hear the HD powering up, then stopping. Fans continue to operate."
This is a good indication the drive isn't working properly.

Try replacing the hard disk.

"
So i changed the RAM, but no joy. I have another computer with the same M/Board and CPU, so I swapped CPU's to see if this was the problem."Why not change the drive?
"Unfortunately, the CPU from Comp1 fried the m/board on Comp2!! Tried putting original CPU from Comp2 back in, but didn't work. So bought 2 new m/boards, processors and ram." Too bad.
"Tried it all in Comp1, but got the problems mentioned. Moved it from Comp1 to Comp2, same problems. Messed about for hours on Comp2, and suddenly worked. Said the CMOS settings were wrong, so went in and changed a few."
Now you've probably created a ton of other issues that I can't fully interpret. At this statee but I'd:
A. Replace the drive.
B. Enjoy my new door stop (old drive)
C. Get all the drivers and stuff for my new hardware, install them right up to date.
C. Reinstall everything fresh from the OS Install Disk.
Enjoy your new system =)
"The only problem is, I don't know what I did to make it work! Comp1 still driving me mad."
Aha, your hard disk is now playing you. I'd be backing up off of it while its still working.
Good luck,
J.

Hi!
I got the same problem in almost the same system. So far I have no idea what to do. I suppose there is something wrong with pc chips m848a motherboard series. Somebody can help?
