I had a problem with windows not booting past the startup screen, when it got to checking the USB ports, it froze, and it was eventually traced to my BOOK external drive, and it had to be disconnected to bootup,why should this happen, also, I got a message that the backup had failed,

go into the bios, and in the boot order have the HD first and, the USB last.

remove all the external drive from the computer
and try to restart the computer.
that should resolve the issue.
