I have a boot problem with a new build computer and it is driving me crazy.
The machine will boot after several minutes of turning the power on and off and repeatedly pressing the reset switch. When it is running it works fine,no probs at all...even plays Far Cry 2 without a hiccup.
But after it has been left a while it is nearly impossible to get going again.
I have tried the ram in different slots, changed the ram timing manually, reseated the ram and graphics card, changed the power supply etc.
I am using 2x 2 Gb sticks of Hyperx which were bought together but not as a matched pair....could this do it? Also I bought a Phenom 9950 second hand....could this be a problem if it has been overclocked at some time?
The cpu fan and graphics card fan and hard drive all come on, but I get no keyboard lights or output to the screen.

To start with, you should be running DDR2-1066 with a Phenom, not DDR2-800. It will work, but it will bottleneck the system.

Did you manually configure the RAM settings in the BIOS? I believe it's supposed to run at 4-4-4-12 @ 1.95v...your board may be defaulting to 1.80v.

"700 watt power supply with 3x 12volt rails (total 53amps)"

Why no brand name given? It makes me suspect that it's a cheap generic unit.

There is an oddity with some power supplies not staying on long enough for the board to latch ps on.

I'd try different brand power supply. Almost all new ps's don't have this issue.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

I was told that DDR2 800 would be fine with my phenom 9950.
Power supply is storm 700w (made by Jeantech) I was told in PC world that it would be plenty for my system.

Actually the ram timings are 5-5-5-15 and 1.8v and I have set them manually

Will it work, yes. Will it give you the best performance, no. The Phenom memory controller was designed with DDR2-1066 in mind.

Here is a link to the specs on that PSU.

I would suspect the RAM voltage too. That is quite a deviation from spec.

I've seen Jeantech PSU's mentioned before...the specs to that unit look good. My point was that he mentioned every other component by make/model but the PSU brand name was mysteriously absent...that's *usually* an indication that it's a cheapie.

"I would suspect the RAM voltage too"

Yeah, there's something not quite right about the RAM. If you look at the HyperX chart that I posted, there's not a single "single channel" stick that runs at 1.80v. There's only one possibility that meets the specs he mentioned (5-5-5-15 @ 1.80v), but that's a dual channel kit & he said he didn't buy them as a matched pair? Could it be the specs differ between the two sticks?
