boot up issues, heat sink

Specs: windows xp, ?
computer started freezing up, then would not boot up at
all, opened case, fans work but heat sink had fallen off,
bracket saudering gave way. Is my motherboard fried?

probly mobod ok, but cpu is probly dead but don't write it off until you can try it with proper cooling.

Like nbrane said; motherboard is probably OK. These old P4's are engineered to shut down the processor before they cook.

I imagine all you need to do is reattach the heatsink/fan and get back to work.

How to apply heat sink paste...use these instructions regardless of the brand of paste you use.

". . .saudering (solder?) gave way" Solder is what connects the electronic parts to the motherboard circuitry. Is that where the problem is or is it just the plastic heatsink bracket that came loose?
