boot up issues after winsows update

Specs: WinXP and Suse9.3
my HP laptop running on WinXp Pro died a couple of months ago after a windows update. After being prompted to restart for updates to take effect, the screen doesn't light up again though can see the HDD light flashing. Tried the power button several times but screen's still black. It has IDE HDD and dual-boot WinXP and SuSE 9.3. Took out HDD and can still access the files (though not sure abt those on linux partition). Has important software and data on the linux partition for my study that I desperately need to salvage. Any suggestions what I can do? Is it possible to put the HDD into another laptop? if so, where to find another laptop which uses IDE HDD? Would be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks

Try to use external monitor, if your laptop works but can't boot from hdd, download and use linux puppy seamonkey (it's a live cd) to back up your data.

Just wondering.....what update you installed....

Hp computers had a problem with sp3 if they had a AMD cpu

sp3 caused multible problems.
There was a program to check and see if it was compatible and if not there was a fix.

The update was fixed, but there is still an old sp3 running around the net. People who can't get sp3 from Microsoft use it.

The above doesn't fix your current situation but if it started with sp3 you may want to consider it before re installing it when you get up and running again.

Can't boot from external monitor too.
