It's a BIOS problem, not a Windows NOT reinstall WIndows, it would just be a huge waste of time.

After changing the battery, did he enter the BIOS & reconfigure all the settings? If not, that would be the place to start.

Surely would help to know what the exact specs of the computer are.

When i was there, i reset the bios to defaults not helped, i have run a memtest it did come up with errors, so i took out one stick at a time to test each but no errors, put both back in & run test again, now coming up with no errors, so i presume not seated correctly. I then run wd hard disc test all ok. the spec as much as i can remember is 768 ram one stick 512, other stick 256, athlon processor, 77gig wd hard disc, on board graphics, win xp. I attached hard disk to my comp via usb cable but would not boot, but may be due to my comp running w7.

You can't boot to a USB drive unless the BIOS boot order has that option and you have it set that way. Even then your hard drive is not going to boot on another system.

What do you hope to accomplish by doing that anyway?

Your last response was 3 hours after my last one. Yet still no system information. How do you expect to get any help when you are not providing any information.

Don't you have the computer sitting in front of you?

I don't have the computer in front of me, the 3 hour gap was becacuse i was at friends house trying different options now back at home. I HAVE included the system spec in the last post, what i can remember of it. My comp does have boot from usb device which it was set to do, but still didn't boot, i thought if it booted to xp log in page then it is not a hard disc issue, (i have done this before with another problem disc) must be motherboard or other component issue. We are not all, all knowing, all seeing, some of us don't know what info will help or is needed at first post, which is why we post, cause we need help.

Site instructions state that you should include system specs.

Is the computer in question an OEM pre-built unit or a custom built? How old is it approximately?

If an OEM post the brand and full model number of the service tag on the back.

When you say the original problem was the computer crashed. Can you describe what exactly you mean? Blue screened, shut down completely, locked up, what?

"cd hangs at boot from cd"

What type of CD are you trying to use? Do you get a message that states- hit any key to boot from the CD?

When you first boot the computer do you see any screens at startup? If so, verify the BIOS is properly identifying the drives and RAM by model and capacity.
