hi everyone,

I am looking at this external hard drive enclosure, http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1337265&Tab=0&NoMapp=0

is it possible to boot up and install Windows ME or Windows XP from this external hard drive enclosure? Assume that my motherboard supports booting up from USB-HDD. Thank you for any helps.

I don't think that you can install WINXP on this drive and boot into the OS from it but I'm going to watch this thread to see if someone has.

If you could do that, you would have portable OS that you could migrate from computer to computer ... which I don't think Microsoft would allow.

Thank you. If it couldn't boot from the external hard drive, why motherboard maker builds in an option to boot from the USB-HDD and other devices as well?

OK. I don't remember where I got the info from but anyway here is what someone wrote:

Why can't I install Windows on my USB drive?

A collection of limitations (both hardware and software) currently prevent Windows from booting and running off a USB drive. Some of them are described in WinHEC 2003 White paper. Another reason not mentioned in this paper is that during any hot-plug operation, the USB bus is completely reinitialized. Windows really doesn't like it when it loses access to its boot device. Imagine, you plug in a USB camera, the USB bus reinitializes, Windows loses access to the boot drive, and *oops* the kernel needs to page in some data and it can't.

Yes, you can boot from the USB external, but it depends what operating system you want to boot. You cannot install XP from it. Has to do with the USB drivers are not loaded in XP until it is fully installed.
