I've always had this problem and MAYBE someone can help. I can't boot from my Sony DRU-500A, which is on the IDE Pri/Slave. I have an Asus A7V8X mobo, and set bios to boot first from the Sony, then my SCSI hard drive. I also have a Plextor CD-RW on the scsi bus. Every time I try to boot from the Sony it will partically run setup, and then I must remove the CD and put into the scsi Plextor drive to complete the installation. I can start fresh using the scsi Plextor and it finds a "bootable CD", and works fine. But I've made a large PE Builder DVD, with lots of plug-ins and want to be able to boot from the Sony DVD on the IDE channel. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Does anyone know if there is a SCSI DVD Burner?

What are you booting, what program are you setting up,
be a little more specific with the problem. State your
problem clearly please....

if your just booting into your system's OS, and its already
installed, then just boot up from your hard drive, not the
cd/dvd drives.

if what i stated just above isnt the case, you need to be
more specific on WHAT YOUR BOOTING....

Gotta agree with The Wanger here Dick
If your trying to boot up normaly the then sequence is, or was in the old days:
A: Floppy Drive(When CD Drives were not invented)
B: CDROM (When they were invented)
C: HDD

Now however set the BIOS to boot from the HDD first then CD then FDD.
OK Mate

OK> If I try to load an operating system like W2000 or XP onto a blank IDE or SCSI drive using the Sony IDE device, setup never finishes--period. After the first files are loaded into Ram, and it reboots it can't find the CD unless I take it out of the IDE DVD-RW, and put the CD in the scsi plextor. If I load from the SCSI Plextor it works just fine. I made a PEBuilder CD for recovery and repair of operating systems, and it work fine on the scsi Plextor, but won't boot on the Sony IDE. I get errors about intelide.sys error 18. I don't have intel IDE controllers, I have VIA IDE controllers, and the viaide.sys file in on the PEBuilder in the same system 32 folder as in XP. The PEBuilder CD is based upon using the XP+SP1 CD. This won't be a problem except I need more plug-ins put into PEBuilder, which will make it too large for a CD, and must be put on a DVD.
I hope I'm making sense!

One more thing. I can boot any form of Linux using their CD's on the Sony DRU-500a DVD+RW on the IDE channel. I can also load Lindows "Live Boot" from the Sony. But I can't load any M$ operating system without swapping the CD from the Sony to the SCSI Plextor to complete the setup. I also can't boot to the Recovery Console from either W2000 or XP CD's. Must boot these CD's from the scsi Plextor. I have the latest bios flash. For some reason the mobo bios switches over to the scsi bios.

Perhaps your W2000 CD is dirty, scratched, etc. Sometimes, certain CD/DVD drives can't or wont read certain disks. This is becuz the lens might be dirty, or something like that. Also, is your Sony DVD drive external or internal? Last of all, try thoroughly cleaning your W2000 CD, or make a copy of it, and run the copy. If you can run linux fine, then its prolly the W2000 CD, it might be damaged or sumthin...

The Sony is Internal. This happens on any Windows CD> 98se, NT4, W2000, XP. And these CD's will read and boot just fine on the scsi Plextor. Also my Suse 8.2Pro will boot and install from Suse's DVD, instead of the 5 CD's using the Sony. I think it has something to do with my bios being turned over to the Adaptec 2940U2W scsi bios because my third option in mobo bios sequence is "scsi", after my LS-120, then Sony DVD-ROM, SCSI HD, then IDE HD. But I can't figure out how to get around this.

After all these years with this problem I finally fixed the problem. Changed mobo bios boot order to Sony DVD Burner ONLY. Disabled LS-120, SCSI Boot Device, and IDE HD. Then it booted my PEBuilder CD and found all hard drives including the scsi 7 hard drives, USB devices, IDE devices, and Promise IDE devices. I didn't have to disable the scsi bios on the Adaptec host card.
