Boot, but nothing after RAM check

Hi, recently this computer has been shutdown by accident when cords have been pulled. Now when i boot it up, it goes through the normal boot screen, and verifies the RAM, but then all i get is a little blinking underscore on the top left, and it hangs there. I'm suspecting a harddrive problem, but i'm really not sure about this. I tried unplugging and replugging a lot of stuff inside the comp, still nothing. I got data that i'd like to keep on there, so can anyone point me in the good direction?

Can you access the BIOS? If not, try disconnecting all the internal drives (both data & power cables) & also unplug any external devices...then see if you can boot & access the BIOS.

I can access the BIOS fine, but like usual, on a dell, there's not much to change in there. The Harddrive still shows up in the IDE control or whatever it is called... It makes a beep also when that underscore shows up.
