Doing multiple upgrades all at the same time is not a good idea. You should have done the fan, got it working, then the memory, got it working.

As is now you cant tell whether it is the fan or the memory that is causing the problem.

The best thing to do is to put the old hard disk back in, the old memory and see what happens for there. Make a note of what the blue screen tells you, particularly the numbers and do a search on Goggle to find out what they mean.

Using caps & punctuation would make your post(s) much easier to read & understand.

You generally can't swap HDDs with XP pre-installed from one machine to another, that's why you're getting blue screens on both machines. Swap them back & do some old fashioned troubleshooting.

In addition to the above I would give the following advice.

Check with Crucial.com for the type and amount of memory that you can run in that laptop. Keep in mind you probably have one stick installed at 512MB. Best to connect after fixing what ails the computer now.

The computer MAY not accept a 160GB harddrive due to BIOS limitations on drive size. When dealing with laptops there may be other considerations too. I would recommend that you get an External USB harddrive. There would be no size limatations then.

Finally, as jam mentioned, if you remove the harddrive you also remove the operating system. You may or may not be able to copy necessary files in order to get a new larger drive running. In any case it appears this laptop has at least a 20GB drive, which is more than suffiecent space for WinXP and many programs. You can store all personal files on the external.

Once you get the laptop running again you can allow Crucial.com to scan the computer and that way you will know EXACTLY where you stand with the RAM. I recommend buying it from them too.

Start at the beginning. If i understand what happened you were getting an error about a fan? Did this mean the computer would not boot into Windows?

"someone told me to run dos and reformat eveything"

NO! Reformatting/reinstalling is NOT a small task! It should be the very last thing you do after you've tried all other fixes. And if it does come to that, make sure to backup all important data 1st & download all the necessary device drivers (sound, video, touchpad, wireless, networking, etc) in advance. Plus you will need to reinstall all the Windows Updats & 3rd party software.

Have you tried running CHKDSK/F as suggested?

If you format, do you have a copy of XP to reinstall? Do you have copies of all the drivers? What about 3rd party software such as anti-virus?

If you wanna experiment & learn how to install Windows from scratch, that's fine...in fact, it's a good thing to know how to do. But if this laptop is to be used for anything important, you may wanna have someone who's a little more qualified have a crack at it. No offense, but from what I gather from your posts, you really don't know what you're doing.

I don't know why you think you'd need a "dos cd" or what you would do with it if you had one. If you wanna reinstall XP, all you need is an XP CD...pop it in, boot off it, then follow the on-screen instructions. In fact, before wiping out what you have, you could try a "repair install". Here's the instructions:

Stay away from Vista.

One more point if I may. This forum is not an IM program. Please use proper spelling, punctuation and grammer.

some times you can tell if you just need to run system restore or if it is a hardware problem
if it is saying to run chkdsk DID YOU?
if so
in the blue screen twards the top left
is there some kind of error
if there is it probably points to the hdd and or software
different errors can mean different things
the other day i got one that said bad pool header which meant possibly somthing wrong with the wireless card or its drivers
reformatting can be tricky
sometimes you may need to do a low level format
you get this from the hdd manuf hdd utilities software
you can download the software from the manuf website onto another pc, burn it and then put it in you laptop to run diags on your hdd
and if needed make your hdd to a like new state with the low level format
then reload windows
it is alot easier than using fdisk to do it
another way with software to reformat is to use partition magic
or slave the hdd with a simple adapter on a reg pc then go into admin tools then disk mgmnt and reformat that way
