I had something similar happen to my system a few months ago. I turned it on, went to put on a pot of coffee, and came back to a screen reading "unable to write to drive c:". I had to run scan disk to try to get it to boot. Scan disk wouldn't finish running, I would get some kind of error (don't remember what it was now), and a blue screen. Tried to boot in safe mode with the same results. Long story short, the only way I was able to overcome this was to reload Windows (98 SE). Before doing that though, I put my hard rive in another system and copied the important files off of it to another drive. I was still able to read the hard drive, though I wasn't able to copy all of the files as it would periodically give me an error reading certain sectors. After reloading Windows and doing a scan disk with surface scan, it found no bad sectors on the drive.
