Comment: M8 has an asus mb with XP pro/sp1, and I think the parellel port might be cactus. No way will the printer or scanner connect through it although the printer will install using a USB cable ( he needs a working parallel port cos scanner is not USB). I tried changing the Bios settings but still no joy, ' maybe I missed something in there'. Also, I always thought adding and removing printers etc to the parallel port while the PC was running could stuff the port or even the MB, but my m8 reckons that's ok cos he does it all the time.... hmm. Anyway, I'm thinking of adding a PCI Parallel port to get the printer and scanner working that way. I know this is a generalisation but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Reply: (edit)You will need to change the parallel port to ECP in the BIOS to enable the port to take a printer.

Reply: (edit)Plugging/Unplugging serial and parallel ports while pc is switched on is asking for trouble. They were not designed to be used in this way. If done frequently a protector should be used as the pins were not made for multiple connects. If a serial device is connected to a parallel port or vice versa almost certainly something will blow as voltages differ. Could this possibly have happened and if so it may explain your problem. Good luck - keep us posted.

Reply: (edit)Thanks Mike, I forgot to add that even when the printer has been dissconected from the PC altogether, windows still sees it as being ready to use.

Reply: (edit)G'day, Is your printer a parallel device or serial? You say that it connects to the USB port- that is a serial connection. Does it have a centronics interface too? If not, it will not work with a parallel interface anyway- in fact I's be interested to know how you mated the connectors. Is the scanner serial (USB) or parallel?? regards, Elric

Reply: (edit)Hi all, first up you say that you have changed the bios settings for the scanner, they should be ecp/epp for it to work. Secondly, has windows flagged any problems with the parralel port, check by bringing up device manager from system in control panel. also, is the printer a HP, i have had problems woth these kocking out scanners before. in reply to elric, modern parralel and usb printer barely have power buttons (some dont!) so there will be no jumpers. Toodle pip Rob
