Solved Blank Screen - HP Pavilion dv4-2045dx

February 28, 2013 at 12:43:53
Specs: Windows 7, MD Turion II, 4GB RAM
I have an HP dv4-2045dx. It was working fine until yesterday morning. I get no picture on the screen. I have tried many reboots, hooking it up to an HDMI external monitor, also to an RGB monitor. No joy. No picture at all. What could be wrong? The laptop boots up just fine, and the lights all come on, but no screen, not even the backlight. Please help

I see a lot of the DV4 series with no video. It is the video chip, you can reflow the chip or replace the mainboard.

Has to be hardware obviously. Worth checking the cable and connections between the screen and the keyboard. Try moving the lid slowly and see if it suddenly comes on - that would give a clue where the trouble lies.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I have wiggled the cables. Closed and opened the lid slowly many times, no luck. How can I tell whether it is the video card gone bad or the screen? I don't want to order a new screen if that's not the problem...

My bad, I missed where you said you had already tried an external monitor.

Can I take it that you never see anything on the screen at all?
This might sound a little quaint but does it "sound" as if it's booting up?

If so then, although it is difficult to be certain, the video module is prime suspect. This is inbuilt and addon cards are not usually available for laptops. Not being able to peer into BIOS makes life difficult too.

There is a technical manual here:

No sweat. I wasnt completely detailed in my description. The system lights all come on, the HDD indicator flashes, and I can hear the HDD spinning. The only thing is no video. Completely black screen. Not even a screen that is backlit and blank. The screen NEVER lights up at all.

See if any one else joins because I know of no easy way to prove what this is.
"Best guess" is video module but that's about all it is. It all rests on whether the test with an external monitor was sufficiently conclusive.
