|Hook up an external monitor to the video port on the laptop to check the video output first. If the issues carry over to the external monitor, it's a bad video card/adapter on the laptop's motherboard, or a loose connection (pull/compressed air blow out/reseat of the connection may help). |
To me, this sounds like a bad LCD though:
Fairly easy fix (if you're mechanically inclined). Look around online for retailers that'll sell you a replacement LCD - with a decent warranty, i.e. here's one for $70 (out of stock however):
