Black Screen when starting computer

Compaq / Armada m700
May 16, 2010 at 15:28:03
Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, 647 MHz / 575 MB
When I turn on my desk top, it states
"Windows could not start because thhe following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

I do not have the original disk. Is my computer totally fried and have I lost every program in my computer?

Thank you,

If you do not have any Windows CDs for your comp, you might be out of luck.

Try searching the Microsoft site and see if you can find a downloadable restore/backup

Odd place for this i know, but i recently restored 3 IBM thinkpads that im trying to sell, all pretty decent upgrades from your current laptop.
